Example 1: Osteoblast culture
Work undertaken by a University has demonstrated that oesteoblast (bone cells) proliferate within a BioVyonTM scaffold at a comparable rate to standard materials after 4 hours. However, after 72 hours the cells had formed a 3D structure of healthy differentiated cells that exhibited enhanced collagen synthesis and ALP activity. The work concluded that BioVyonTM scaffolds supported an optimum MG63 human osteoblast adhesion. When confluent, they did not undergo apoptosis but they formed islets of 3D tissue. Initial cell proliferation was more rapid on TCP than BioVyon™ scaffolds but subsequent cell differentiation on BioVyonTM scaffolds was more rapid and significantly higher than TCP.
Example 2: Stem cell culture
Efficient and accurate differentiation of adult and embryonic stem cells remains an overriding research priority in laboratories around the world. At present, many stem cell differentiation protocols are limited by the non-physiological two-dimensional nature of traditional cell culture methodologies. Extensively optimised differentiation protocols in these traditional culture systems typically generate mixed populations of cells, of which less than five percent may be of the desired adult differentiated phenotype. A collaborative study has demonstrated the use of BioVyonTM scaffolds as three dimensional biomimetic supports that promote enhanced stem cell growth and differentiation.
Aeration in bioreactors and cell culture
The efficient transfer of oxygen is essential for cell culture. The uniform porosity and pore size of BioVyonTM materials produced consistent and uniform bubble sizes and patterns to achieve superb oxygen transfer. Products can be made in tubes or flat sheet for OEM customers. BioVyonTM materials are manufactured by cGMP to achieve the highest cleanliness standards demanded by these applications and have USP Class 6 regulatory approval.
